‘Hater of All Black Men’: S.C. Teen Charged After Posting Videos...

A white South Carolina teen is facing charges after authorities uncovered a series of racist videos and text messages espousing hatred and threatening violence against African-Americans. The 16-year-old, a former student at Cardinal Newman High School in Richland County, threatened to “shoot up the school” last spring and filmed himself firing a shotgun and automatic rifle to demonstrate his antipathy for Blacks, according to The State. Local authorities charged him with making student threats, and he was expelled July 15. Cardinal Newman High School officials said they immediately contacted police after discovering the student’s racist video in which he pretended to shoot Black people. (The State / video screenshot) Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott said his office took the student’s threats seriously after learning of the racist texts and videos officials said had been circulated among students. “It was brought to our attention that videos were being distributed among students,’’ Lott told the paper. “We worked very closely with the school to identify the students involved. We take all threats seriously. This is just an example of how schools and law enforcement can work together to quickly address threats and perceived threats to schools and students.” In one of the clips, the unnamed student describes himself as a “hater of all Black men” and uses the N-word multiple times. He then pretends an object on the floor is an African-American and shoots it repeatedly with his guns. “Thank you for watching my PSA. F–k all n—–s,” he looks into the camera and says. An initial text and video uncovered by officials at the Catholic school also found the teen making remarks and pretending to shoot Black people. An incident report stated that the teen used a derogatory term for African–Americans and said how much he hated them, describing them as “stinky.” That, along with another video, lead Cardinal Newman to expel him. Just two days after his expulsion, police discovered multiple other videos, including ones in which the teenager claimed he was “on his way to shoot up the school.” This “constitutes the crime of student threats,’’ according to the sheriff’s department incident report. The law explicitly prohibits a student from making threats to kill or to inflict bodily harm upon someone else via any form of communication. According to The State, the threatening texts and videos came at a time of increased national concern about school safety. So far this year, there have been 22 shootings at American schools this year in which someone was hurt or killed, according to a recent report by CNN. An April shooting at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte left two people dead and four others injured when a gunman opened fire on the last day of classes. On Friday, officials with the Catholic Diocese of Charleston said the school immediately contacted local police after learning of the student’s videos and his threats to “shoot up” the school. They also sent a letter home to parents alerting them to the incident. “Because the threat was promptly addressed by school officials and the authorities, the risk to the school community was neutralized,” Cardinal Newman officials said in a statement. “Safety and respect for the dignity of all is a top priority at Cardinal Newman School,” it continued. “Administrators take extensive measures to ensure that the school building is secure at all times and they immediately contact law enforcement if they feel there is a potential threat against school students or staff.”

Robots and Racism: New Study Suggests That Humans Apply Racial Biases,...

Yes, robot racism is a thing. A new study out of New Zealand’s University of Canterbury found that humans tend to extend their racial biases to black and white robots, CNN reported. The “Robots and Racism” study, conducted by the Human Interface Technology Laboratory, suggests that humans assign a race to human-like robots, then project their biases/stereotypes accordingly. Researchers fear this could pose serious issues, especially as the use of AI and automation/robots increases in day-to-day life. Researches found that humans ascribe a racial background to human-like robots, and apply racial stereotypes accordingly. (Photo: Science Photo Library/Getty Images) “If robots are supposed to function as teachers, friends, or even carers, for instance, then it will be a serious problem if all of these roles are only ever occupied by robots that are racialized as White,” researchers wrote . For the study, researchers used robots with human-like limbs and a head, with complexions that were either white/pinkish or deep brown. The team asked participants to engage in a “shooter test,” in which they were told to “shoot” at images of Black and white people and robots that flashed across the screen holding a weapon. The subjects shot the Black, unarmed robots more than the white, unarmed ones, researchers found. “It is amazing to see how people who had no prior interaction with robots show racial bias towards them,” Christoph Bartneck, the lead researcher, told CNN, adding that the bias against Black robots is reflective of the bias against African-Americans. For one part of the study, participants were asked to “shoot” black and white people and robots who appeared on the screen with a weapon. (Robots and Racism study / screenshot) “Robots are not just machines, but they represent humans,” he added. In a second test, the researchers added lighter brown robots to the mix and found that participants’ racial bias had significantly been reduced once the robots were diversified. For study authors, this could “potentially mean that diversification of robots might lead to a reduction in the racial bias towards them.” Bartneck told CNN the finding leads him to believe that “we have everything to win” by offering diversified options. “In the same way that we do want Barbie dolls in all colors and shapes, we also want robots in more than just white,” he added.

NYC Passes Curriculum Changes to Better Reflect Schools’ Majority Non-white Population,...

New York City schools implemented a curriculum change Wednesday aimed at making school curricula better reflect the populations they serve. The Department of Education said the new framework dubbed Culturally Responsive Sustaining Education will allow teachers to feature more cultures in the classroom and highlight resources written and developed by traditionally marginalized voices. It moves away from talking about a tractor trailer or a boat to explain velocity to students and toward examples from students’ lived experiences like using the subway, for example. “Research shows that when students see themselves and their peers reflected in the books they read and the lessons they learn, academic outcomes improve,” Chief Academic Officer Linda Chen said in a statement to Atlanta Black Star Friday. Brooklyn teacher and activist Maurice Blackmon told CBS New York the change prompts teachers to think about “what am I teaching, how am I teaching, based on who I’m teaching.” If teaching history from multiple perspectives & teaching books of authors from diverse backgrounds is anti-white, then we should question why whiteness seems to be antithetical to equity. — Maurice Blackmon (@mblacademic) July 26, 2019 He said he’s already teaching that way. “For instance as a social studies teacher that serves a student body that is primarily Latin and Black, I have designed curricula around the hip-hop culture,” Blackmon told CBS New York. A report released earlier this year from the NYC Coalition for Educational Justice found that while 67 percent of the city’s public school students are black or Latino, about 84 percent of book authors in elementary schools are white. The coalition, which advocates for culturally responsive education, applauded New York’s move as “parent power” on Twitter Wednesday. Many Black parents have long welcomed a more diverse approach to school curricula. “This superintendent is taking his shot and I’m here for it,” mother Monika Shealey said on Twitter Thursday. New York’s Panel for Educational Policy, a group of mostly mayoral appointees, approved in a unanimous 11-0 vote the chancellor’s call for “culturally responsive” education, according to The Wall Street Journal. Robert Osborne, a Manhattan parent at the meeting the Journal covered, said his son is mixed-race and it was “important for him to read books about people who look and sound like him. To not hear that means he only hears from the dominant culture.” But some parents worry their children will be overlooked in the new push. “I think it’s just wrong. I think it’s misguided,” parent Yiatin Chu told CBS New York. As the meeting in New York’s Chinatown continued, the question of which groups were included in these changes arose, and parent Chu did not like what he was hearing, CBS New York reported. “The Asian community, specifically the Chinese community, is one of the poorest communities in New York City and I’m disgusted that the mayor treats our group this way — aligning us with white privilege,” Chu said. Another question from the crowd was — will the plan take away from important subjects like reading and math. Natasha Capers, the director of the NYC Coalition for Education Justice, took that one. “Absolutely not… Every culture has had math, every culture has contributed to technology,” she said. “Why don’t we acknowledge that?”

Nashville Cop Under Investigation After Video of Him Manhandling Young...

A Tennessee police officer has resigned in disgrace after he was caught on video using excessive force against an African-American woman during a traffic stop earlier this month. Barrett Teague resigned from the Metro Nashville Police Department on Wednesday after a video posted to Facebook showed him strong-arming Adreneyonia Ensley, 21, at a gas station and slamming her up against a nearby car, according to The Tennessean. Adreneyonia Ensley, 21, had exited her car to check her license plate tags when she was manhandled and assaulted by Nashville Metro Officer Barrett Teague. (YouTube / video screenshot) Ensley detailed the incident on social media, saying Teague parked behind her after stopping her for expired license plate tags. After handing over the documents the officer had requested, Ensley got out of her car to check the tags for herself. That’s when the clip shows Teague run up behind her, then pin the young woman’s arms behind her back. After a brief tussle, the police officer slams Ensley into the car parked next to hers. He proceeds to manhandle her, and appears to try and force her back into her own car as several bystanders attempt to intervene. “I think he just stopped me just to pick because we are black,” Ensley told News Channel 5 of the incident. “It’s hard to trust police officers now that something like this happened.” The young woman and her boyfriend, who was with her at the time, were arrested and charged with resisting arrest. Ensley also said her 18-month-old son was left alone in the car for several minutes during the incident. MNDP officials called the video very concerning. “The administration of the MNPD [and] Officer Teague’s supervisors at the East Precinct are very concerned with what the video shows,” MNPD said  after learning of the video. Teague, a four-year veteran of the force, was decommissioned on July 4 after video of the confrontation surfaced. He was placed on desk duty for several weeks and was the subject of an investigation into possible excessive force before his resignation Wednesday, The Tennessean reported. Though the administrative investigation is kaput, Teague remains under criminal investigation by the department for his actions. The case will be turned over to the district attorney’s office to determine if charges will be filed. The charges against Ensley and her boyfriend have since been dropped, her attorney said. Metro Nashville Police didn’t return requests for comment. Watch more in the video below [embedded content]

‘You’re Gonna Kill Me!’ Dallas Police Bodycam Footage Shows Officers Mocking...

Source: Mike Stone / Getty This. Is. Disturbing. Dallas Police Bodycam Footage Captures Final Moments Of Tony Timpa’s Life Footage has bee released from a 2016 case of a Dallas man dying while being arrested by police. Tony Timpa, 32, died after authorities pinned him to the ground in the controversial “prone position” with his face in the ground and a knee in his back. The Dallas News obtained the footage of Timpa’s final moments after a three-year records fight. A federal judge finally ruled Monday in favor of a motion by The News and NBC5 to release records from his death, saying “the public has a compelling interest in understanding what truly took place during a fatal exchange between a citizen and law enforcement.” In the footage, Timpa who called for help in August 2016 because he suffered from schizophrenia and depression and was off his meds, is seen being aggressively pinned down. He tells authorities 30 TIMES that he can’t breathe and wails “You’re gonna kill me” as he lays pinned down for 13-minutes. Authorities alleged that the pinning was necessary to keep the man from rolling into the street. As he lay dying officers then mock Timpa and claim they hear him snoring. “It’s time for school. Wake up!” says one in the video obtained by The Dallas News. “I don’t want to go to school! Five more minutes, Mom!” replies another mocking the now dead man. “He didn’t just die down there, did he?” one asks after noticing that Timpa was lifeless. The Dallas News reports that officers Kevin Mansell, Danny Vasquez, and Dustin Dillard were indicted by a grand jury in 2017 on charges of misdemeanor deadly conduct and a grand jury’s indictment stated that the “officers engaged in reckless conduct that placed Timpa in imminent danger of serious bodily injury.” But in March, Dallas County District Attorney John Creuzot dismissed the charges saying that medical examiners did not believe the officers acted recklessly and “cannot, and will not, testify to the elements of the indictment beyond a reasonable doubt.” The video is below. TRIGGER WARNING, it is very disturbing. [embedded content] Yet another case of police not listening to people when they say “I can’t breathe.”
