Protesters have been on the ground fighting fervently against the killing of Black people and demanding justice for George Floyd. Unfortunately, some people have lost their lives during the demonstrations.
While their deaths are not in vain, they have gone overlooked due to the unrest. These are some of the people who have died while fighting the good fight
1. David McAtee
David “Yaya” McAtee was shot and killed in the parking lot where he set up his barbeque pop-up restaurant. McAtee was shot by the police during their attempt to break up a crowd, as Blavity previously reported.According to the Louisville Courier-Journal, his body remained on the ground for over 12 hours as police investigated the shooting.

McAtee was 53 years old and was known for offering free meals to police officers who stopped by. “We lost a wonderful citizen,” Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer said. “David was a friend to many, a well-known barbecue man.”
2. Chris Beaty
Former Indiana University football player Chris Beaty was killed during a protest in downtown Indianapolis, the New York Post reported.Beaty suffered multiple gunshot wounds when violence erupted during the protest.

The 38-year-old remained active with the Hoosiers football program and served as a mentor to the players. He also managed a nightclub, founded an event planning company and began selling face masks during the coronavirus outbreak.
3. Italia Kelly
Italia Kelly, 22, was killed outside of a Walmart in Iowa while leaving a protest, the Associated Press reported.Kelly was shot as she was getting into a car with a friend while civilians were engaged in a shootout with police.

No arrests have been made in connection to her death.“She was always smiling, always laughing. That’s why it’s so sad that she was taken in such a violent way,” Kelly’s aunt said. “That is not Italia. She was the bright, bubbly big personality in the room.”
4. David Dorn
In St. Louis, David Dorn, a 77-year-old retired police captain, was fatally shot by looters outside of a pawn shop on Tuesday, the Associated Press reported.The shooting was streamed on Facebook Live, but the video has since been taken down. Police have yet to release details around what happened prior to the shooting, and no one has been arrested.
Former St. Louis County Police Chief Tim Fitch said Dorn’s personality was “bigger than life.”
